On April 19, Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity honored six individuals, government agencies and organizations for their partnership during the last two years at the organization's Celebrating Partnerships Recognition Dinner.
Approximately 100 people attended the fund-raising dinner and silent auction which began at 6 p.m. at the Avalon Restaurant on the grounds of the Fairplex in Pomona.
The local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity holds the event to recognize those who have played key partnering roles in the efforts to provide decent, safe and affordable housing in western San Bernardino and eastern Los Angeles counties. Over the last two years, the affiliate has completed seven houses in Claremont and Chino, and 35 throughout its service area in the last 16 years.
Talaya Trigueros, the top-rated Mid-day Air Personality at 94.7 The Wave radio was Master of Ceremonies for the event. Honorees included Wescom Credit Union, which provided full sponsorship of the affiliate's house building project at last year's LA County Fair; the LA County Fair, which generously made space for the building of the Chino house during the fair in September (and will do so again during the 2007 Fair); the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 11, which provided significant labor and expertise at the affiliate's six-house build in Claremont; and Montclair City Manager Lee McDougal, whose leadership for the first City Managers Build Day has helped introduce Habitat for Humanity to city officials throughout the area. Cyndi Torres, Executive Director of Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity, read the letter Lee McDougal sent to all 16 city managers in the organizations service area. The letter resulted in 14 of the 16 city managers attending the Build Day at last years fair.
Additionally, the affiliate highlighted the two cities -- Claremont and Chino -- in which it has built houses and with which it has partnered in the last two years. Chino, with 10 Habitat houses, currently leads the area with the most Habitat houses a message Mayor Dennis Yates made sure to mention last night. Two more Habitat houses will be built in the City of Chino on 10th Street. PVHFH is currently raising the funds to begin these homes.
